MANCHESTER UNITED target Dries Mertens has admitted that he would consider a move to England.

In the summer transfer window, Napoli sporting director Pierpaolo Marinov claimed the Red Devils were following Mertens “very closely.”

Mourinho had sent his top scouts to Naples to cast their eye over the striker.

And it is believed that the interest has showed now sign of slowing down.

Mertens, 30, has scored 12 goals for club and country this season and has a relatively cheap £25million release clause stitched into his contract.

And although the Italian claims he is happy in his homeland, he has also left the door ajar for a potential move to the Premier League.

“I’m happy in Italy and I’m fine at Napoli,” Mertens said.

Mertens also backed United’s chances of catching rivals Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Mertens GETTY

Jose Mourinho has been keeping tabs on Mertens since the summer.

Napoli recently lost back-to-back Champions League matches to the Blues, but Mertens believes they are not as great as everyone is making out.

“They’re not unstoppable because the game at home we played really good and we had chances to make it 3-2 and we didn’t score them and two seconds later they scored to make it 3-2,” he said.

“That was a bummer but I think they have a very good team, it’s working, they’re doing really good but like every team, it’s going to stop one day.”
