The game marked the opening of the National League North club’s new Peninsula Stadium and will not be forgotten in a hurry.

The two sides played out an entertaining 4-4 draw, much to the delight of fans who swiftly mocked Carragher’s defensive performance on Twitter.

But the Liverpool legend has hit back at the jibes, jokingly blaming goalkeeper Shay Given for the mishap which led to Salford’s first goal.

When asked for his analysis of the goal, he replied: “Read it brilliantly as usual.

“Then expected my keeper to come and collect it but he’s nowhere to be seen hence the hesitation.

“Then he appears as I’m about to tackle the striker!

“I can only apologise on his behalf.”

Speaking after the match on Twitter, Gary Neville claimed he was relieved to have only conceded four goals.

“Good day at the Peninsula Stadium opening game! Conceding four felt like a clean sheet,” he wrote.

The Class of 92 and Friends team included Salford owners Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Ryan Giggs.

Given, Carragher, Steve McManaman and Dwight Yorke were also among the big names on the team-sheet.
