BARCELONA defender Thomas Vermaelen says he regrets staying at the Nou Camp in the summer.

Thomas Vermaelen has been restricted to the bench since move to the Nou Camp.

The Belgian defender has struggled to stamp his mark on the side since moving from Arsenal for £15million in 2014.

He has been limited to just seven league starts in three years and has only made one appearance, coming off the bench in the Copa del Ray, this season.

Vermaelen spent last year on loan to Serie A outfit Roma but again only made four starts.

The 32-year-old had the option to move onto pastures new in the summer but wanted to stay and fight for his place at the Nou Camp once more.

But now he is regretting that choice as he watches the latter years of his career pass him by.

Vermaelen is hoping to get back into the Belgium squad for the upcoming World Cup.

In the summer I thought it would be positive to stay at Barcelona, but after seeing how my situation is here, I've seen that's not the case.

Thomas Vermaelen speaking about his time in Barcelona.

"In the summer I thought it would be positive to stay at Barcelona," he told Het Laatste Nieuws.

"But after seeing how my situation is here, I've seen that's not the case."

A host of European clubs will be attracted at the prospect of taking Vermaelen from La Liga.

Crystal Palace and Everton are rumoured to be keeping tabs on his situation.

And with the World Cup fast approaching Vermaelen looks set for the exit door when the transfer window re-opens in January, but he is not giving any possible location away.

He added: "I'm not going to say anything about that because last time I spoke my words were taken out of context."

Vermaelen's contract with the Catalan club runs until 2019.

So any possible deal will more than likely be on loan.
