West Bromwich Albion v Manchester United: Tense clash unlikely to see goals

West Bromwich Albion welcome Manchester United to the Hawthorns on Sunday afternoon, with both sides in desperate need of victory at opposite ends of the Premier League table.

The Baggies picked up a precious point on Merseyside on Wednesday night after claiming a hard-fought goalless draw with Liverpool, but it was a result that extended their winless run to 16 matches in all competitions and means Alan Pardew's men are only outside the bottom three by virtue of goal difference.

The visit of Manchester United will certainly provide a stiff test for Pardew's charges and Paddy Power go 5/1 (6.0) that the Baggies claim a vital victory against Jose Mourinho's men, whilst the odds compilers offer 3/1 (4.0) that this match ends in stalemate for the Baggies' fifth time in six games.

Manchester United cast aside the bitter disappointment of derby day defeat against Manchester City to keep their season on track with a crucial 1-0 victory against AFC Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, and are 4/7 (1.57) favourites to maintain momentum with a win here.

Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal of the game against the Cherries and Mourinho will hope that the strike sparks a revival in fortunes for the big Belgian, who had managed just two goals in 14 games for United before finding the net against Bournemouth.

United's defensive qualities shone through once again against Eddie Howe's men, for the men from Manchester chalked up their 10th clean sheet of the league season so far and no side has conceded fewer Premier League goals this term.

Paddy Power go even money (2.0) that the visitors keep the Baggies at bay, while the same firm offer 7/5 (2.40) that United win to nil at the Hawthorns; Pardew's team have failed to find the net in any of their last three outings and both of these selections could well prove to be popular with punters.

Manchester United have conceded in five of their last six matches away from Old Trafford and Paddy Power offer just 4/6 (1.67) that the hosts score in this game, while the same firm offer a chunky 17/2 (9.50) that the Baggies take all three points without conceding against Mourinho's men.

Only Bournemouth have conceded fewer goals than the Baggies outside of the top seven in the Premier League this season, while there has been just one goal scored in the last three matches that Pardew's side have played, so it is fair to suggest that while West Brom have remained solid enough at the back, they have seriously struggled to make much of an impact in the final third of the pitch.

There is potential, therefore, for another tight tussle this weekend and Paddy Power's 4/5 (1.80) quote for fewer than three goals to be scored when Manchester United visit the Hawthorns may well put punters on a path to profit ahead of Sunday's showdown.
