Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey will out until the new year with a hamstring injury.

Arsene Wenger confirmed at his Friday morning press conference that the Wales midfielder will be out for longer than first feared with a hamstring strain he picked up during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at Southampton on Sunday. The initial hopes were that he would only be out for a few days, and he missed Wednesday night’s 0-0 draw at West Ham United.

But further tests have shown that Ramsey will be out for at least another three weeks, putting him out of a slew of games until the new year, starting with tomorrow’s home game with Newcastle United. “Of course Aaron Ramsey will not be available,” Wenger said. “I said that he will be out for a little longer and that will be maybe three weeks that he is not in contention.”

That means Ramsey will miss next Tuesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against West Ham United, the crucial Premier League game with Liverpool on 22 December, Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion away and then the visit of Chelsea on 3 January. Arsenal then travel to Nottingham Forest for their FA Cup third round tie on 7 January.

Wenger confirmed that Theo Walcott is currently suffering with a muscle injury of his own which kept him out on Wednesday night. “He had a little groin problem,” Wenger said. “He would have been in the squad at West Ham. He will not be available tomorrow I think as well. It’s not a bad one. I think he has a little chance to be available against West Ham [on Tuesday]”.

Shkodran Mustafi returned to Arsenal training today but will be given a late fitness test to see if he can face Newcastle United tomorrow.
