Birthday boy Wenger: pain of defeat doesn't ease with age

On the pain of losing: "The complete disappointment is still there. It's a nightmare. It's absolutely horrible. Unfortunately that doesn't get better with age. That's why I would say to the young managers: survive disappointment and respond in a strong way."

On the effect his contract impasse last season had on his players: "It created a negative environment for the team. Every press conference became a bit one-dimensional. That was maybe not good."

Are the situations with Ozil and Sanchez having the same effect? "For players it's not exactly the same. A player is responsible for the performances on the Saturday. For the managers it's a little different because a lot of the work is psychological as well. If the leader gives a feeling that he's not completely committed to the team, of course that has a big bearing."

Koeman: 'Impossible' for Everton to replace Lukaku

On Everton's start to the season: "It's a difficult situation because we did not have a normal pre-season because we had to qualify for the Europa League. We had eight or nine new players and that makes it more difficult."

On losing Romelu Lukaku: "It was a big challenge to lose Romelu to Man United. We got big money but try to find somebody who will score at least 20 goals. That's not so easy and maybe impossible for Everton."
