Pep Guardiola said Ederson is likely to miss Manchester City’s midweek Champions League game against Feyenoord after the collision that saw Sadio Mane sent off in the 5-0 win over Liverpool, but joked the goalkeeper would be “more beautiful” as he did not seem to suffer a fracture. The City boss also praised Ederson’s bravery in so frequently coming off his line, but refused to say whether referee Jon Moss’s decision was right or wrong.

The Brazilian had to be substituted and subsequently received medical attention after Mane caught him with a high foot in the 36th minute of Saturday's match, leading to a straight red.

“I think it is not broken, the bone,” Guardiola said. “That is so important. He will be more beautiful after that. Hopefully he can come back as soon as possible. Of course it was not intentional from Mane, he didn’t see him but the impact was hard. Hopefully he can work and stay. Maybe he will not play in the next game.”

Asked to give his opinion on the decision, Guardiola merely referenced the misfortune he felt his side suffered in the recent 1-1 draw with Everton when Kyle Walker was sent off.

“I didn’t speak with what happened to Kyle Walker [a red card] against Everton. We played 50 minutes plus 90 minutes, not even a yellow card so the decision of the referee. The action is hard. I cannot think a player like Mane is going to make hard to the face so I think he followed the ball but the action is dangerous. I don’t know if it is red card or not but I am pretty sure it was not a red card for Kyle Walker against Everton.”

Guardiola did however praise the approach of his goalkeeper.

“Yes we spoke we play so high the goalkeeper has to play on the 16 metre box and go in that position and defend from our back three. It is not the first time. The pre-season against Tottenham [Hotspur] he did it. It is important to know we have one guy to help our central defenders. It is brave. Unfortunately it is injured but he will come back as soon as possible.”
