Jose Mourinho has been asked by the Football Association to explain comments he made in the build-up to Manchester United’s 2-1 derby defeat by Manchester City, in which he accused Pep Guardiola’s players of diving.

The FA has requested Mourinho’s observations of his own comments after he said of City’s players last week: “A little bit of wind and they fall.”

The request comes after Mourinho also claimed that had he made a political gesture such as Guardiola’s decision to wear a yellow ribbon on his chest – a symbol of protest against the imprisonment of pro-independence politicians in Catalonia – he would face action from the FA.

Mourinho has been given until 18:00 GMT on Monday to respond, which comes after United’s trip to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday afternoon.

United are already facing an FA investigation due to the post-derby fracas in the Old Trafford tunnel, during which players and staff from both teams clashed over the loudness of the City celebrations. The FA extended the time that both clubs had to respond by 48 hours until 18:00 on Friday, although United and City have stressed that no punches were thrown during the melee.

Jose Mourinho reflects on Manchester derby defeat

City assistant manager Mikel Arteta was left with a cut near his right eye after being struck by a plastic bottle, while Mourinho was drenched in milk that was thrown at him.

Mourinho and Guardiola were keen not to discuss the incident when they faced the media earlier this week, although the United manager did blame to ugly clash on “a question of diversity in behaviour, diversity in education”. Guardiola meanwhile denied that City’s celebrations were over the top, and took the blame for encouraging his players to enjoy the derby win that gave them an 11-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.
