Manchester United vs Leicester: Five things we learned as Jose Mourinho's men maintain 100% record

Goals from subs Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini meant United could even survive a missed Romelu Lukaku penalty as they made it three wins from three

Manchester United continued their fine start to the season as goals from super subs Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini eventually saw off a stubborn Leicester at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho's side made it three wins from three but were forced to rely on their strength in depth as first Rashford and then Fellaini climbed off the bench to score in the second half.

United now sit top of the Premier League and look a good bet to stay there after another impressive performance.

Here are five things we learned:

1. United roll on

Much was made last season of United's inability to put teams away on home soil. Time and again they would put inferior sides to the sword only to concede from one of a handful of shots and target and have to settle for a draw.

This 2017 version of Mourinho's side seem an altogether different animal. As Gary Neville noted earlier this week Mourinho's side now seem capable of beating teams in many different ways. Last week it was by sheer weight of pressure and subsequently decimating Swansea on the break. This week they relied on a good old fashioned set piece to finally break open an otherwise solid-looking Leicester.

They are yet to play anyone of any real quality but it would be wrong not to surmise that it all looks very ominous for the rest of the league - they could even survive a missed penalty today - and after three games they look like they will take some shifting from the top.

2. Pogba now the player United bought him to be

Whether it's the presence of Nemanja Matic behind him or Lukaku in front of him or Neymar being more expensive than him or a combination of all three and more Pogba really does now look every bit the player United paid £89m for him to be.

The Frenchman was a joy this evening, head and shoulders above everyone else, as he dominated proceedings from start to finish, controlling the midfield third with a physical presence and a range of passing noone around him could match. He could have finished with two or three goals too had a couple of long range howitzers not narrowly missed their mark in the first half, but had to settle for a decisive role in Rashford's opener with a dazzling piece of skill key in winning the corner the substitute would ultimately score from.

At 24 he looks ready to take over the league and on current form is the early frontrunner for Player of the Year. If United are to win it all this season it will be Pogba who takes them there.

3. Maguire the bargain of the summer

A few years ago £17m would have been a hefty outlay. In a post-Neymar world it is a snip and Leicester will know that they may well have the bargain of the season on their hands in the shape of summer signing Harry Maguire.

The newly-called up England man was outstanding at the heart of Foxes defence and excelled as the visitors put up a resolute rearguard action against their freescoring hosts.

Maguire was tremendous in an ultimately not-good-enough Hull side last term but looks more than ready for the step up he has made. At £17m he already looks a steal.

4. Not everything Lukaku touches turns to gold

As starts at a new job go Lukaku's opening at United has been the stuff of dreams. But even he can't do everything right it seems.

Fresh from joining a very exclusive club last week after scoring on his first two league appearances for the Red Devils the big Belgian was handed a gilt-edged chance for a fourth in three here today.

But Kasper Schmeichel proved equal to his spot kick from 12 yards. You can't win them all, Romelu.

5. Rashford gets his moment

Rashford saw his place in Mourinho's starting eleven taken by Anthony Martial today after the Frenchman's back to back goalscoring cameos from the bench in recent weeks.

But this week it was the 19-year-old's turn to get a moment in the sun scoring the opening goal within three minutes of his introduction.

In truth Rashford was perhaps a shade unlucky to lose his place after impressing, albeit without any goals, in the opening two games but gave his manager food for thought with another bright performance today.
