Brighton to contest Tomer Hemed's violent conduct charge from FA

Hemed scored the only goal as the Seagulls beat Newcastle in a Premier League clash at the Amex Stadium on Sunday.

However, the Israeli forward was later involved in a coming together with DeAndre Yedlin during the closing stages, and appeared to stamp on the Newcastle defender's leg.

The Football Association subsequently charged Hemed with "an alleged act of violent conduct which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video", setting a deadline of 6pm on Tuesday for a response.

A statement on the club's official website published on Tuesday evening read: "Brighton & Hove Albion can confirm that striker Tomer Hemed has appealed the FA's charge for an alleged act of violent conduct in Sunday's 1-0 win over Newcastle United at the Amex.

"Hemed was charged by the FA yesterday following an incident involving DeAndre Yedlin, and his response was submitted before Tuesday's 6pm deadline."

Speaking following his side's 1-0 victory on Sunday, B righton boss Chris Hughton had defended Hemed, insisting the Israel international's stamp on Yedlin was a pure accident.

''I have seen it, and my absolute impression was that there was no intention, particularly knowing the player," he said.

''My first impression was that there was absolutely no intent. I was unaware of it at the time, and I have just been shown it.''

Brighton continue their Premier League campaign at Arsenal on Sunday ahead of the international break.
