Burnley crashed out of the League Cup after losing 5-3 on penalites to Leeds United, despite Robbie Brady's stunning 96th-minute equaliser that sent their third-round tie into extra-time.

It had been 0-0 at Turf Moor until the 80th minute when Hadi Sacko's strike began a flurry of late goals.

Former Leeds striker Chris Wood levelled from the spot in the 89th minute, with Pablo Hernandez restoring the visitors' lead with a penalty of his own in the fourth minute of stoppage time only for Brady to force extra-time with a free-kick shortly after.

James Tarkowski was the only Clarets player to see his penalty saved in the shoot-out and Stuart Dallas scored the decisive spot-kick to send Thomas Christiansen's men through.

Jeff Hendrick was making his first start for Burnley after being ruled out for a month with injury and his compatriot Kevin Long could have broken the deadlock in the first half as he shook off Gaetano Berardi to meet Johann Berg Gudmundsson's free-kick but nodded wide from six yards.

Scott Arfield and Ashley Barnes were also guilty of missing from close range but the game only sprung into action after some second-half substitutions as Wood replaced Sam Vokes and Brady also entered under the radar, but it was Sacko who broke the deadlock for Leeds.

That looked to be enough for Leeds until Long won a penalty from Berardi in the 88th minute, with Wood stepping up to convert.

Hernandez responded from the spot but by now both sides were fully warmed to their task and, when Brady was given the chance to take aim with a 25-yard free-kick, it seemed almost inevitable that the top corner would soon be bulging. Within seconds, it was.
