Jamie Carragher has some damning words for Liverpool fans hoping for a Premier League title

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool should have kept Philippe Coutinho until next summer

Liverpool already look to have fallen out of this season's Premier League title race and Jamie Carragher doesn't see the Reds landing English football's biggest prize any time soon.

Liverpool haven't won a league crown since 1990, with Luis Suarez almost firing them to glory in the 2013/14 season, when they ultimately came up just short against Man City.

Writing in The Telegraph, Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Carragher paints a gloomy picture for supporters dreaming of Premier League glory, saying that he doesn't expect the Anfield club to top the table in the near future.

"Liverpool will not win the title this season," Carragher began.

"I am not convinced Jürgen Klopp will ever be able to bring it back to Anfield. I am not sure when my old club will win it again. I certainly do not see it happening in the near future.

"These are not pleasant words with which to introduce myself as a columnist for The Telegraph, but such is the current balance of power in the Premier League Liverpool must face a harsh reality.

"It is no longer appropriate to evaluate the success or otherwise of a Liverpool manager based on whether he wins the league. The competition is too strong to set the bar so high.

"There is no doubt the ultimate ambition remains the same as it has been since the last title in 1990 and the onus is on Klopp and Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group to banish such pessimism, but every season I find myself asking the same questions. How can Liverpool do it? How can they compete with three of the wealthiest clubs in the world? Given the history and expectations at Anfield, has Liverpool become English football’s impossible job?"

Liverpool are currently seventh in the table, and seven points off Manchester United who are joint-top with Man City, with the Reds welcoming Jose Mourinho's side to Anfield tomorrow for a crucial game.

Klopp's men have only won one of their last seven games in all competition.
