Jurgen Klopp makes a transfer statement that may alarm Liverpool supporters

Klopp and Liverpool were expected to break their transfer record on several occasions this summer as the club prepare to return to the Champions League, yet Mohamed Salah is the only big money signing after failed bids to land Southampton defender Vigil van Dijk and Leipzig’s Naby Keita.

With star man Philippe Coutinho pushing to secure a move to Barcelona after he lodged a transfer request last Friday, there was an expectation that Liverpool would look to bolster their fragile squad in the final two weeks of the transfer window.

Yet Klopp has insisted he is in no rush to sign players, fuelling the suspicion that Liverpool will not be splashing the cash in the transfer market before the August 31st deadline.

“If the transfer window had ended yesterday we already have a team I like, a good team,” stated Klopp. “The transfer window is a very important time, but it’s also important what we do with the actual team.

“We will see what happens. I don’t know what will happen. A few things can happen on both sides. Everything leads to the 31st of August. It’ll be a busy day, I don’t know if we will be involved, but we will see.”

Klopp also stated there was no update on the future of Coutinho, despite Barcelona general manager Pep Segura expressing their confidence in completing a €100m for the Brazilian playmaker yesterday.

“I don’t know why other people are saying what they’re saying. I don’t even know him. I have never met him,” said Klopp when asked about the Segura’s statement.

“We have already said what we have to say. No news from me. Nobody told me anything different since we spoke last time.

“Since he had a back problem he is not in training. I have nothing bad to say about this.

“We are not silly, we know it is a very difficult situation - but there’s nothing new to say. It’s not always easy for me to say the 100 percent truth, even if I don’t like to lie. But this time this is the situation.”

Klopp confirmed Coutinho would not be avaialbel for Saturday’s Premier League game as he was still not training, citing a bad back as the reason for his absence.

Striker Daniel Sturridge could be set to return after checking out from his latest sabbatical in the club’s treatment room, with Liverpool looking to get their first league win of the season at Anfield this weekend.
