Manchester United not happy with Shane Long's 'robust' challenge that has left Maraoune Fellaini on the sidelines
Manchester United officials are frustrated that Southampton striker Shane Long escaped serious punishment after what they viewed as a 'reckless' tackle on Marouane Fellaini ruled the Belgian striker out of Wednesday's Champions League clash against CSKA Moscow.
Ireland striker Long was booked for a lunging tackle that left Fellaini in agony and while the Belgian midfielder carried on in the game, the damage caused in the clash means he faces a spell on the sidelines.
Fellaini has not travelled with United for the game in the Russian capital, with United officials letting it be known that they are not impressed with Long's challenge.
Old Trafford insiders have expressed a belief that the punishment for the foul would have been different if Fellaini - who has often been criticised for his aggressive approach to the game - had delivered similar challenge on one of the Southampton players.
Long has also come under fire on social media since the incident, with several United fans eager to suggest the Irishman should have been sent off for his exuberant tackle.
United manager Jose Mourinho may offer some comment on Fellaini's injury when he speaks to the media in Moscow on Tuesday, with the duration of the player's spell in the treatment room yet to be confirmed.
