Fonte signs two-and-a-half year contract

Portuguese international Jose Fonte has completed an £8million switch from Southampton.

Having undergone a medical earlier today, the central defender put pen to paper on a contract that ties him to the club until summer 2019.

And he immediately paid tribute to Slaven Bilic, who he described as a key reason behind his decision to snub alternative offers - from the likes of West Bromwich Albion - in order to join West Ham.

"The manager was a very big influence," he told whufc.com. "I thought that he really wanted me, he sold me the project and the club's ambition.

"I told the manager that we want to win and we want to win trophies. The ambition is big and we need to aim high.

"West Ham is a massive club, it is an exciting challenge and it should be for everyone. It is a new challenge, a new beginning and I am looking forward to it."

Fonte, who played a role in his nation's Euro 16 success last summer will wear the number 23 shirt formerly used by the likes of Jimmy Walker, Herita Ilunga, Sebastien Carole and, more recently, Diego Poyet.
