West Ham are locked in a two-way battle with Tottenham to sign Portuguese international Andre Gomes.

The 24-year-old midfielder was voted as the worst signing in Spain last season by readers of Marca earlier this year following his €35million move from Valencia to Barcelona, for whom he made 47 appearances.

However Gomes could be on his way to West Ham as a deadline day alternative to William Carvalho, who appears to be no closer to joining the Irons despite having expressed a preference to move to London.

Tottenham, like West Ham have also held exploratory talks with the player and his representatives, who will decide in the next few hours where the Portuguese international will spend the rest of the season.

West Ham's bid to sign Carvalho appear to be doomed, with his current club Sporting refusing to reduce their €40million asking price.
