CLARETS captain Tom Heaton will have a further 24 hours to prove his fitness for Saturday’s trip to Stoke City as he seeks to overcome the calf injury that ended his run of 142 consecutive league starts last weekend.

The 30-year-old missed the Turf Moor clash with Manchester City on Saturday and remains ‘touch and go’ for the visit to the Bet365 Stadium, according to Sean Dyche.

One player definitely out of that clash is Iceland winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson. Dyche wouldn’t put a timescale on his absence but said it was a straightforward hamstring injury.

But Dean Marney looks set to continue his record of starting all of Burnley’s Premier League games this season.

He came off after scoring against City with a nerve problem affecting his back and hamstring.

Dyche said: “Tom is touch and go, we will give him another 24 hours then make a decision. Johann, no he won't make this. Dean Marney has a strong chance of being fit.”

Veteran goalkeeper Paul Robinson filled in ably for Heaton last weekend and may be required to do so again in the Potteries, although a later decision will be made on the England goalkeeper’s availability.

“It's just the nature of it. It's down to the end of the injury,” said Dyche.

“Then it's a judgement call about whether you want to risk that or not. Robbo certainly delivered a good performance, ably assisted by Nick Pope.

“I'm not going to make a drastic decision on it or one where I think it's going to put him at risk. On the other hand, if he says I'm absolutely clear that will be a different conversation.”

Meanwhile Joey Barton continues to train with the Clarets.

“He's still with our sports scientists, still keeping himself trim,” said Dyche. “He's just keeping himself trim, enjoying what he's doing, getting himself fit.”
