ASHLEY Barnes described his goal in front of the Kop at Anfield as a ‘magical moment’ - but the Clarets striker said the fact it counted for nothing in the final reckoning had been a kick in the teeth.

The 27-year-old netted the 10th Premier League goal of his career when he slid Burnley ahead in the opening stages, but Georgino Wijnaldum and Emre Can struck for Liverpool to turn the game on its head.

Scoring at Anfield was a feather in the cap for Barnes, who was playing in Southern League Division One South and West for Paulton a decade ago.

“I couldn’t have dreamt of scoring in front of the Kop as a youngster,” Barnes said. “It’s up there definitely, at a tough place like this to come and play. It was a magical moment, but I’m disappointed with the result.”

Barnes revealed he had been on the end of some stick from Joey Barton for his goal return in the week so he was delighted to find the back of the net for the fourth time in his last 11 Premier League appearances.

“It felt incredible. As a striker for the ball to hit the back of the net is an amazing feeling,” the former Brighton striker said.

“Joey’s been giving me stick this week in training and luckily enough I’ve got one.

“It’s another one to the tally, I’ve still got a long way to go to get to a target (for goals) but it’s another one on the board. Unfortunately coming away with a loss is a kick in the teeth.

“We did so well again. The first half was really good from us but to concede on half-time is a kick in the teeth.”

Burnley led for the just the third time on the road this season when Barnes scored and having held the advantage for just six minutes at Tottenham and eight at Swansea they had their noses in front for 39 minutes at Anfield.

But just as it looked like they would reach the break with the lead Wijnaldum equalised when his initial flick hit Ben Mee and bounced up for the midfielder to slot home from close range.

It was a fortunate ricochet for Wijnaldum but it was the ninth time this season the Clarets have conceded in the final minute of a half in the Premier League.

Asked if the goal had changed the game, Barnes said: “Massively. I don’t know why it happens but we need to be switched on for 45 minutes plus.

“That’s not in the back of our minds. The hype of not winning on the road comes from the outside but it will change. We’ve got to dust ourselves down and go again for a massive, massive game next weekend (against Sunderland).”

Burnley have now lost 2-1 at Tottenham, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool in recent weeks and Barnes added: “We’ll take the positives and we’ll re-evaluate the goals we’ve conceded and see where we can do better.”
