SAM Vokes has been through his share of strike partners at Burnley and he's confident he can hit the right notes again with record signing Chris Wood.

So far the two front men have been paired together from the start just once, when £15million Wood scored the winner against Crystal Palace at Turf Moor.

Wood's fast start to his Clarets career, which has so yielded three goals, has seen him usurp Vokes as the man in possession of the shirt when Sean Dyche plays one up front, but Wales international Vokes believes the two could dovetail as well, should they be required to do so.

"I definitely think we can work together. I think we showed that (against Palace). We both have a physical presence," the 27-year-old said.

"Over the years here we have had a few partnerships and they have worked well and I think Chris Wood is a fantastic talent.

"He has already scored some important goals for us. So when we go with two up front it’s important to get that relationship going."

Now Vokes is hoping the two can bound off the pitch as well as on it, adding: "Obviously, we have had strikers here before and it’s important to get on well off the pitch and during training well.

"You want to forge that relationships on the pitch. It’s important for both. I think you see that when you play on the pitch."

Vokes has helped his partners thrive in two-man attacks with Danny Ings and Andre Gray, who were both prolific for the Clarets before moving on to pastures new, Ings to Liverpool, where injuries have disrupted his progress, and Gray to Watford, scoring his first goal for his new club last week.

Now Vokes and Wood also have Ashley Barnes, Jon Walters and Nahki Wells pushing for places when they're all fit, which is a far cry from the position Vokes and Ings found themselves in when they first started banging the goals in together in the 2013/14 campaign.

"I think back to when Danny was here, we were the only two strikers at the club, both playing at the time," Vokes said.

"Now we are an established Premier League side with many options and good quality options. It’s great to see the progression.

"I think the competition for places is huge now and there’s some talent within in that competition. It’s only good for the squad with people training harder and working harder every day."

Vokes struck up a relationship with Gray off the pitch as well as on it, and he has kept in touch with the £18million man since his Turf departure.

The strikers lived close to each other, which helped their partnership and relationship flourish, and Vokes admits he's missing his car share partner on the way into training.

"He is not round here anymore but I still keep in touch. I spoke to him the other day and it was sad to see him leave the car school – I have to drive myself now," he said.
