A thigh injury suffered in training on Friday ruled Jordan Henderson out of the Premier League clash with West Ham United.

The Liverpool captain was set to take his place in Jürgen Klopp’s starting XI for the game at London Stadium – but, on advice from the club’s medical team ahead of kick-off, Henderson was left out of the squad.

“Yesterday we started training with Hendo and he felt a little bit in his thigh after training,” the manager explained.

“We took him with us here and I thought he could play this morning. I talked to the medical department and – how it always is – Hendo wanted to play, but the medical department said the risk is too big.

“So he’s not even on the bench, that’s not cool for us but we cannot change it.”
