David Moyes is not in the running to return to Everton.

The Scotsman is the bookmakers' favourite to replace Ronald Koeman after the Dutchman was sacked on Monday afternoon.

But Mirror Football understands that Moyes will not be back in the Goodison Park hotseat.

David Unsworth, the club's Under 23 manager, is likely to be in caretaker charge and is the 9/2 second favourite for the top job.

Moyes was in charge of Everton for 11 years where he led the club into the Champions League.

But he has since floundered at first Manchester United, then Real Sociedad and finally at Sunderland.

The 54-year-old is also in the frame for the Scotland job after Gordon Strachan's departure.

Koeman paid the price for a disastrous start to the new season – despite spending more than £150m on summer signings – with the sack.

A 5-2 thrashing at home to Arsenal on Sunday was the final straw, and the Everton board are currently meeting to thrash out details.

The board showed their trust in Koeman by allowing him to bring in several big names including Gylfi Sigurdsson, Wayne Rooney and Michael Keane.

But the Blues have only won two of their last ten games and are in the bottom three after the humiliating defeat.

A club statement read: "Chairman Bill Kenwright, the board of directors and majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri would all like to express their gratitude to Ronald for the service he has given to the club over the past 16 months and for guiding the club to seventh place in last season's Premier League campaign."
