Pascal Gross scored Brighton's first ever Premier League goals to send Chris Hughton's team on their way to their first top-flight victory for over 34 years.

The south coast club had failed to score in their opening three games – and had managed only six shots on target.

But the newly-promoted side lodged six on Ben Foster's goal in 90 minutes against a terrible West Brom side.

And German Gross, the first signing of the summer, got them off the mark in the 45th minute when he controlled Solly March's cross before slotting home at the far post.

It was Brighton's first top-flight goal since Gordon Smith scored in May 1983 – and their first at home since Terry Connor netted in their last win in the old First Division the previous month.

Gross doubled the lead after 47 minutes with a low shot and Tomer Hemed made it three after 63 miutes when he got in front of Jonny Evans to flick home from man-of-the-match Gross's cross.

PSG star Grzegorz Krychowiak‏ had low-key debut in a holding midfield role and West Brom only improved when Tony Pulis introduced subs Kieran Gibbs, Oliver Burke and James Morrison.

And the three combined to set up the Scotland midfielder to score after 77 minutes.

Tomer Hemed looked set to leave Brighton this summer but now founds himself given the task of kick-starting their season.

Hemed was linked with Reading, Derby and Leeds while Seagulls manager Chris Hughton tried desperately to bring in another striker.

But Tottenham’s Vincent Janssen turned down a deadline-day switch to the south coast, and a move for Israel international Hemed failed to materialise.

Now, with Izzy Brown and Sam Baldock injured and Glenn Murray battling to overcome an ankle problem, Hemed looks set to spearhead Albion’s attack against West Brom as they look for their win - and first goal - of the Premier League campaign.

“He will have the same response as he always has,” Seagulls boss Hughton said.

“Tomer is a very genuine individual. He really enjoys being here and really enjoys being a Premier League player. He has always worked hard for this club and he will continue to do so.

“The one thing about speculation is that the players all hear it. Sometimes the players know more than we do!

“There aren’t too many secrets and ultimately everybody just has to get on with it.”
