Roy Hodgson's return to the Premier League ended in defeat as Crystal Palace became the first Premier League team in history to lose their first five matches without scoring a goal.

Saints climbed up to fifth place before the 3pm kickoffs with their first away win of the season through Steven Davis's early goal.

But the sacking of Frank De Boer after four defeats and the appointment of the former England boss did nothing to change Crystal Palace's fortunes.

The problems at Selhurst Park run deeper than the managers.

Davis gave the Saints the lead after only six minutes after Wayne Hennessey pushed out a Dusan Tadic cross. It was only the fourth goal of the season for Mauricio Pellegrino's side.

England keeper Fraser Forster made a stunning point-blank save from Christian Benteke – and then denied Jason Puncheon in similar style after the break.

Palace's last Premier League goal was scored by Patrick van Aanholt back on May 14 against Hull under Sam Allardyce – two managers ago.

The South London club's first five matches have seen home defeats to Huddersfield, Swansea and now Southampton – all winnable games. And their next four fixtures are Manchester City away, Manchester United away, Chelsea at home and Newcastle away.

Will we see Van Dijk today?

Virgil van Dijk appears to have kissed and made up with the Southampton hierarchy, but will we see him off the bench today?

Saints have made four changes to their starting line-up with Yoshida, Lemina, Tadic and Long all coming in.

A win today would see them go up to fifth - for a while at least.

Crystal Palace shake-up continues

Sammy Lee has left Crystal Palace as the club’s backroom shake up continues.

Former England boss Roy Hodgson replaced sacked Dutman Frank de Boer earlier this week.

But there is no room for his former Liverpool right-hand man Lee who has followed De Boer out of the Selhurst Park door.

Lee served as Sam Allardyce’s assistant as Palace survived relegation last season.

But the former Three Lions coach has now left the Premier League club along with Orlando Trustfall, brought in by De Boer also as an assistant manager, and head of performance Ryland Morgans.

Lee, who has had two spells working on England’s coaching staff, has been replaced by Ray Lewington.

A statement on the club’s website read: “We would like to thank Orlando, Sammy and Ryland for their efforts during their time in south London, and wish them all the very best for the future.”

Palace have moved to beef up their backroom staff with the appointment of former Republic of Ireland midfielder Steven Reid as a first-team coach.

The 36-year-old has worked on the Reading coaching staff for the past two years after joining them from Burnley following his retirement from playing.

New boss Hodgson takes charge of the south London club for the first time as the Eagles - who are the only Premier League club not to score or record a point this season - take on Southampton.
