Dele Alli and Ben Davies found the target to ensure Tottenham got their season off to a winning start.

The visitors had been given a helping hand when Jonjo Shelvey was shown a red card for a stamp on Alli - right in front of the referee.

And it wad Alli who scored first, firing home after a delightful ball from Christian Eriksen.

Ben Davies doubled the advantage by sweeping the ball home from inside the area minutes later.

With Arsenal beating Leicester 4-3, Liverpool drawing 3-3 with Watford, and Chelsea losing 3-2 to Burnley, it has been far from quiet on the Premier League's opening weekend.

And Tottenham ensured they kept up with the early pacesetters.

Good time and place finish from Davies.

Newcastle have been let down majorly by Shelvey.

Lovely finish from Alli.

Taken it right on the stretch.

Still can’t underestimate the cross from Eriksen.

GOOAAAAALLL Newcastle 0-1 Tottenham (Alli)

Good sliding finish by Dele Alli.

But that goal was all about the perfect clipped pass by Eriksen.

It has all been Newcastle since the red card.

Jonjo Shelvey red card

Is this the most brainless piece of football ever?

Shelvey has needlessly stamped on Dele Alli, RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE REF!

Barely comprehensible.

Red was compulsory.

Christian Eriksen goes close

The closest Tottenham have come to a goal was through Eriksen.

They haven’t been at their best so far.

Has Harry Kane’s August hoodoo caught on?

Fairly lively start at St James’ Park.

Kyle Walker-Peters (he will always be know by his full name!) has looked solid.

Dwight Gayle going closest on either side but he screwed wide.

Tottenham warm up

Tottenham have been warming up.

That isn’t the news here, the new is the hideous warm up kit.

What an atrocity!

Someone just walked past my computer and vomited at the sigh of it.

A complete eye-sore.

Managers quotes corner

Mauricio Pochettino:

“Tottenham are alway amazing in playing well and show exciting football.

“It is a different challenge ahead but the mentality is to win every game.

“It shouldn’t effect the players. outside it is a big issue but inside the players are calm. It is a good thing he apologised to everyone. I pick a focussed team to win games.”

Rafa Benitez:

“It is exciting for everyone here after a year in the Championship.

“We will have to try and defend and attack we need to find the balance.”

Toby Alderweireld previews

Toby Alderweireld is feeling good ahead of today’s game.

But is a tad worried about the pressure of facing Newcastle.

The magpies are used to winning following their season in the Championship.

Mike Ashley on his running of Newcastle

Here is some more Mike Ashley from his Sky Sports interview.

The Newcastle chief talks about running the club and what mistakes he thinks he might have made.

“Create more than it was. It had the history and the base, but maybe I can make a little bit of a difference.

“I probably rushed into it. I was naive about how football worked. I thought it was the right thing to do to raise as much money as possible.

“I should not have changed the name of St James’ Park. Very naive in the beginning, in the middle I was getting my arms around it. I thought we were going along quite well.

“Now it’s gone back, we’re starting at the beginning again.”

Mike Ashley admits Newcastle United cannot offer Rafa Benitez the money to compete in the Premier League

Mike Ashley has admitted that Newcastle United cannot compete with the Premier League’s big guns during a Sky Sports interview.

The Magpies are back in the Premier League after a one-year exile but have been one of the least active teams in the summer transfer window.

Only £30million has been spent on four players, with Rafa Benitez struggling to get deals over the line ahead of the big kick-off.

Billionaire owner Ashley insists that he is not wealthy enough to fund Newcastle outside of their means.

“Every penny the club generates he can have, but it won’t generate enough. Newcastle United does not have a £40m-a-year stadium naming rights deal.

“I don’t want the fans to watch this interview and think ‘that’s great Rafa is getting £150m in the morning’ - he’s not.

“Rafa has [managing director] Lee Charnley’s help. And Lee Charnley answers to Rafa and not the other way around, let’s make that crystal clear. Rafa makes all the final decisions on players out and players in but he has to do it with the money the club has.”

Graeme Souness on Danny Rose interview

Danny Rose sparked controversy during a newspaper earlier this week.

He brought attention to Tottenham’s ‘low’ pay compared to their rivals and hinted at some personal unhappiness at the club.

Graeme Souness has reacted to Rose on Sky Sports, and he agrees with the left back.

“I think long-term, ultimately yes.

“Imagine Tottenham don’t do well. There’s a mental block to play at Wembley.

“Does Dele Alli want to be there? It’s not like they’re 10-20% less? It’s 50% or 100%.

“Some teams below them are paying 100% more than they are on.

“If I was a big player and I knew I was on less, I’d bang on the manager’s door, if you’re not going to give it to me, I’m off.”

Harry Kane century

Harry Kane is one shy of a century.

An early goal today would calm the nervous, although August isn’t a lucky month for him.

The England hot shot scored 35 goals last season, 28 the year before and 31 the previous campaign.

Goal machine.

The managers

Two managers, two frustrated figures.

Neither have been able to splash the cash this summer which they maybe would have liked.

Rafa Benitez has brought some players in, Manquillo and Lejeune play today, but is worried about the strength of his squad as they return to the Premier League.

Mauricio Pochettino is slightly less stressed about his lack of spending - but has been forced to play youngster Kyle Walker-Peters at right back this afternoon.

Tottenham arrive

So, Tottenham have arrived at St James’ Park.

Faces full of concentration from Harry Kane and Dele Alli as they enter the ground.

No new signings yet at Spurs but plenty of expectations following their second placed finish last season.

Newcastle XI

Rafa Benitez names new signing Florian Lejeune in his starting XI.

Fellow new boy Jacob Murphy is on the bench.

The side is boosted by goalscorer Gayle, who leads the line.

Tottenham XI

A surprise or two for Mauricio Pochettino?

Walker-Peters gets a golden opportunity after Walker’s sale and Trippier’s injury.

It’ll likely be the back three with Sissoko and Alli in behind Kane.

Benitez set sights high at Newcastle

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez is hoping to bridge the financial gap to the Premier League’s aristocrats eventually by repeating his heroics at Valencia and Liverpool.

The 57-year-old Spaniard will send the Magpies into battle with Tottenham on Sunday as they resume life back in the big time with the furore over the club’s summer transfer activity - or in his opinion, lack of it - ongoing.

However, having seen owner Mike Ashley speak publicly about his inability to match the spending power of the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea, Benitez is ready to implement a long-term plan to take the club back to where he believes it belongs on a budget, just as he did earlier in his career.

He said: “At Valencia we were fighting against top sides and doing well. At Liverpool, people said, ‘You have to win’ but no, when I went there they told me, ‘In three years, we want to compete’.

“We won the Champions League and played the Carling Cup final in the first year.

“We can improve, we can compete, we can challenge for things, but not from the beginning. We can’t think, ‘We have to be there’ because it’s not the reality now.

“The reality now is that we have a squad with great players, great commitment, but we need to see how we perform in the Premier League. “Am I happy with what was going on during the summer? No, but I think we can improve and we can compete and we can do the right things - if we understand where we are.”
