Manchester City consolidated their position at the summit of the Premier League with a comfortable win over Crystal Palace, who remain bottom with no goals and no points.

Leroy Sane scored City's opener, Raheem Sterling claimed a double, while Sergio Aguero edged closer to the club's all-time goalscoring record with the fourth, taking him to 176 goals, just one behind Eric Brook's long-standing record.

Substitute Fabian Delph made it 5-0 two minutes from time with a majestic curling effort from the edge of the box to compound another miserable day for Palace.

City put an indifferent first-half behind them to put Palace to the sword after the break and pile the misery on Roy Hodgson and his players, who face Manchester United then Chelsea next in the Premier League.

Here are five things we learned from today's one-sided encounter at the Etihad Stadium...

1. Sane shows his enduring worth

Leroy Sane made a huge statement in midweek, scoring both goals in City's 2-1 Carabao Cup win at West Brom.

Sane's reward was to keep his place in the starting line-up, at the expense of Gabriel Jesus, and the Germany international justified his inclusion with an exquisite goal to open the scoring, exchanging passes with David Silva, before flicking the ball over Scott Dann and applying an exquisite finish.

Sane, who has made himself undroppable, then turned provider for Raheem Sterling to make it 2-0.

2. City raise their game after sloppy first-half

It's hard to recall City giving the ball away so cheaply under Guardiola, as they did in the first-half.

Retaining possession is the key to Guardiola's philosophy, but City's players kept losing it time and time again, much to their coach's clear dismay.

Players of the calibre of Kevin De Bruyne were sloppy in the execution of their passing, and lacked their usual clinical edge on the ball.

But Guardiola's half-time talk clearly had the desired effect, as City were far sharper on the ball and brutal in their second-half demolition of Palace.

3. Mendy a major injury concern for City

Benjamin Mendy, at £52million the most expensive defender in the world, has impressed for City so far this season, but was forced off with a knee injury just before the half-hour.

Mendy clattered into Andros Townsend but came off worse, earning a yellow card and injuring himself in the process.

City must wait to learn the full extent of Mendy's injury, but with key games coming up against Shakhtar Donetsk and Chelsea, they can ill-afford to be without their first-choice left-back.

4. Palace face a tough battle for survival.

For almost the entire first-half, Palace did not look like a side rooted to the bottom of the table with zero points and zero goals.

They played with industry, endeavour and could have been ahead themselves, with on-loan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek twice going close.

But a momentary lapse in concentration saw City open the scoring, with the second goal killing any hope they had of a comeback.

Next up for Palace is a trip to Manchester United and then Chelsea at home, with the very real prospect of Roy Hodgson's side remaining on zero points and goals after eight games.

Hard to see them surviving if that's the case, with leading striker Christian Benteke going off injured not helping their cause.

5. Aguero must wait to be crowned City's all-time goalscorer

All eyes were on Sergio Aguero as the City striker aimed to overtake Eric Brook as the club's all-time leading goalscorer.

Aguero, on 175 City goals, needed two to draw level with Brook and a hat-trick to overtake him. Aguero had several chances to equal Brook's long-standing record, but was unable to get on the scorehseet until the 78 minute, when Wayne Hennessey was unable to keep out his fairly tame header.

But it's only a matter of time before Aguero is crowned City'a all-time leading scorer.
