Manchester City restored their eight-point lead with a dramatic late strike - thanks to serial match-winner Raheem Sterling.

Sterling's goal, six minutes into stoppage time, extended City's winning run to 19 games in all competitions and sparked scenes of pandemonium at the Etihad Stadium.

After sweeping the ball into the net, Sterling ran the length of the pitch, pursued by his team-mates and the rest of the squad, while Pep Guardiola and his staff went beserk, celebrating wildly on the pitch.

Not since Sergio Aguero snatched the title from Manchester United on goal difference with his dramatic added-time strike on the final day of the 2011-12 season has the Etihad Stadium witnessed such late drama.

Guardiola’s exuberant celebrations earned the City boss a talking to from ref Paul Tierney, while the Spaniard exchanged verbals with Southampton’s Nathan Redmond at the final whistle as the teams left the pitch.

Guardiola explains why he dropped Toure for a 21-year-old

Manchester City boss Pep Guadiola has revealed Yaya Toure was left out of Sunday’s matchday squad to make way for rising star Aleks Zinchenko.

Toure, 34, was omitted from the squad at Huddersfield for the first time in almost three months - the last time he was dropped was in early September.

His replacement in West Yorkshire was 21-year-old Ukraine international Zinchenko.

It came just days after the veteran Ivorian made only his third start of the season in the Champions League win over Feyenoord.

Guardiola confirmed that Toure was not injured or ill – he was simply bumped out of the squad to make way for Zinchenko.

And he’s explained why, even hinting that the rising star could become a regular fixture in his 18-man set-up.

Zinchenko, a £1.7million signing from Russian club Ufa, appeared to be going nowhere when a loan to PSV Eindhoven did not work out last season.

But he has caught Guardiola’s eye and the player’s attitude in training has greatly impressed the manager, reports Manchester Evening News .

He made his City debut as left back against Feyenoord, but Guardiola confirmed that he sees him as cover right down the left-hand side.

“I decided to bring Aleks Zinchenko into the squad because he’s training amazing,” said Guardiola, who added he would have played Zinchenko against Shakhtar Donetsk next week, had he not been forced to leave him out of the squad by Uefa rules.

“I don’t know why Uefa made this rule with the Champions League list – last season it happened with Yaya and this season with Aleks – with all the players we have in the squad we have to reduce the squad, and we were not able to use him against Feyenoord.

“Against Shakhtar, Zinchenko would play but is not able to, and I wanted to put him on the list because he deserved it.”
