Manchester City extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points with another emphatic win.

Pep Guardiola's side made it nine straight wins in the league with a convincing triumph over Arsenal, which took them further away from nearest pursuers Manchester United.

Goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero – who was honoured for becoming City's all-time leading scorer in midweek – and sub Gabriel Jesus gave City victory.

Sub Alexandre Lacazette pulled one back for Arsenal in the 65 minute to make it 2-1 and give the visitors hope, but a goal from Jesus nine minutes later saw City seal the win.

Guardiola's side have now scored 38 goals in 11 games and are threatening to run away with the title, with the season less than a third of the way through.

Aguero, who went past former City striker Eric Brook on 178 goals in midweek, made it 179 with his side's second from the penalty spot, after Raheem Sterling was brought down.

Record-breaker Aguero was given a guard of honour made up of City legends before kick-off, to mark his historic achievement in becoming the club's all-time leading scorer.

Player ratings

Manchester City continued their impressive form as they swatted aside Arsenal in a Sunday afternoon stroll.

Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring in the first half, driving the ball beyond Petr Cech and into the far corner of the net.

Any hopes Arsenal had of a second-half comeback were dashed when Nacho Monreal conceded a penalty after barging into Raheem Sterling.

Sergio Aguero converted the spot kick to double City ‘s advantage before Alexandre Lacazette pulled one back with a driven effort through Ederson’s legs.

But any hopes of a comeback were soon ended when Gabriel Jesus converted a pass from the offside David Silva.

Five talking points

Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus all found the net as Manchester City swiped Arsenal aside with a 3-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium.

City remain top of the Premier League and extended their lead over Manchester United to 11 points, ahead of Jose Mourinho’s side’s trip to Chelsea on Sunday evening.

In form winger De Bruyne got the goal scoring rolling in the first half when he thumped into the bottom corner.

Argentine Aguero, who became City’s record scorer earlier this week, doubled the score from the spot, after Nacho Monreal had barged down Raheem Sterling.

Sub Alexandre Lacazette pulled one back for the Gunners before Gabriel Jesus restored the two goal lead with a tap-in.

GOAL! Man City 3-1 Arsenal (Jesus)

Jesus gives City their two-goal cushion once more!

Silva is played through and he looks offside, the replays prove it, but the flag stays down and he cuts across the area for Jesus to finish.

Surely that’s that for the Gunners.

GOAL! Man City 2-1 Arsenal (Lacazette)

Lacazette gives Arsenal a lifeline!

Why doesn’t he start?!

Great ball from Ramsey to put him in and Lacazette buries it through the legs of Ederson.

Thumping finish!

GOAL! Man City 2-0 Arsenal (Agero)

Aguero makes it 2-0 from the spot!

Cool as you like from the Argentine, who slots home after Monreal had felled Sterling.

Long way back for Arsenal now.

GOAL! Man City 1-0 Arsenal (De Bruyne)

City break the deadlock!

Brilliant from the Belgian.

His initial strike is saved by Cech, Sane keeps the attack going, De Bruyne plays a one-two with Fernandino and strikes past Cech left-footed superbly.

1-0 City!

Guardiola backs Arsenal

Pep Guardiola has no doubt Arsenal could challenge his Manchester City side for the title.

The Premier League leaders host the Gunners on Sunday.

Arsenal finished outside the top four for the first time in 21 years last season and their start to the current campaign was indifferent.

But after losing just one of their last seven games to climb to fifth, the Londoners’ season is starting to show potential and Guardiola is wary of their threat.

He said: “We are in November. They won the FA Cup last season. The prestige of the club, the Emirates Stadium - of course they are a contender.

“It is nine points. The difference (between us) is nothing, believe me.

“People consider we are going to play like the last two months all season. When that has happens I can say, ‘OK we have a big chance to be champions’ but nobody can assure you that. We have to fight.”
