Wayne Rooney waited 13 years for the moment - and it meant everything to him when he produced an Everton match-winner on his return to Goodison Park as a Blue.

The England international, 31, arrived on a free from Manchester United with plenty to prove after a disappointing final season at Old Trafford.

Leading the line, Rooney duly delivered with a bullet header before the break that did enough to earn Everton an opening day win over Mark Hughes' Stoke.
