Jose Mourinho's complaints about everything from referees to the spending power of his greatest rivals have been dismissed by Alan Shearer.

Manchester United go to Everton today having had one day's rest since their 0-0 draw with Southampton on Saturday where the Old Trafford crowd started to turn on their boss.

It was the Red Devils' third draw in a row after failing to secure the points at Burnley on December 23 and Leicester on Boxing Day - which were both 2-2.

This horror run for a side which was expecting to challenge for the title this season followed defeat in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Mourinho refused to suggest the Championship's Robins were lucky after that defeat, but repeatedly called them lucky.

Although United are four points better off than they were at the same stage last season they are now third behind Chelsea in second and 15 points from Man City in first.

And Mourinho's demeanor is notably downcast with a number of pundits agreeing his side is a reflection of the manager.

Among wider complaints about the spending power of Manchester City when his club had dropped £300m on talent - after paying a world record fee for Paul Pogba - Mourinho has aimed referees for penalty shouts going against his side.

Shearer is having none of that though, saying overall performances of the star-studded squad have been below par.

He says they were lucky to snatch at point with a late leveler against Burnley and needed David de Gea to save the day on a number of occasions against the Saints.

"Jose has pointed to penalty appeals in each of the three draws that have totally derailed their season over the festive period," Shearer's column in The Sun says.

"I would point to the overall performances in each of those three games against Leicester, Burnley and Southampton — simply not good enough.

"They did not do enough to win any of them and you could say they were fortunate to get a point against Burnley with an injury-time equaliser."

Mourinho goes into today's match at Everton with strikers Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic unavailable, while Ashley Young is suspended for three games after accepting a violent conduct charge for elbowing Southampton's Dusan Tadic.

Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini and Eric Bailly remain sidelined, with question marks over Chris Smalling, Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian.
