Arsene Wenger has told Arsenal fans to stop moaning - and get behind the team.

The Gunners supporters have been infuriated by the manager's failure to buy an outfield player during the summer.

Arsenal face Stoke on Saturday, and Wenger said: "I think to support the club and support the team is to stand behind the players. It is not always expecting someone to come down from heaven to sort out all your problems.

"Support is believing in the players in the squad and this is a good opportunity to do that for our supporters."

The Arsenal manager also hit back at former Gunners star Paul Merson, who accused Wenger of "cheating" the fans by not signing a striker even after learning he would be without injured England forward Danny Welbeck until Christmas.

Goalkeeper Petr Cech was the only transfer window arrival, with Wenger failing to land a top-class striker after missing out on Karim Benzema and Edinson Cavani.

Wenger was clearly annoyed with Merson — and with other suggestions that he lied about Welbeck's injury.

The club confirmed shortly after the transfer window shut on September 1 that Welbeck had undergone knee surgery the previous week.

"First of all, I am surprised that people accused me of lying," said Wenger. "When I was in the press conference on (the previous) Friday morning, I did not know Welbeck had a bad setback.

"I did not lie to you. I gave you the information I had.

"I heard late on the Friday night that his condition had not evolved as well as we thought it would and he had needed a specialist and needed further investigation. Apart from that, if we did not find someone [to sign], we did not find them.

"Let's not be naive as well. These players have experience, they are 25, 26 years old and they know the job, they know what to do, they are ambitious, they have the quality.

"Do you buy the player because he strengthens his squad or not? The solutions we had [in terms of potential signings] were not convincing at all."
