Arsene Wenger has confirmed 'there is a date in the diary' for contract talks with Theo Walcott.

The England winger has only 12 months left on his current deal, but Arsenal are keen to extend his stay beyond the end of next season.

Walcott has been blighted by injury in the last two years, playing only 13 Premier League games last term, and so far managing the same number this campaign, with one game left to play.

Only three of those appearances have been from the starting line-up, but Wenger insists the 26-year-old is still very much part of his long-term plans.

The Frenchman said: "Yes there is a date in the diary for the next contract talks.

"I don't especially see the need to inform you the day we are meeting his representatives."

Earlier this month, Wenger said he saw Walcott's future as a central striker rather than a wide player, and said he is in his 'golden years', something he wants to see at the Emirates.

“I bought him from Southampton when he was 17 because I believe in his qualities as a finisher," said Wenger. "The timing of his runs is very intelligent.

“He is at the best age now. Being 26 to 32 as a striker is the best age and I would not like to miss that golden age.”
