Arsenal won the Community Shield after a penalty shootout victory over Chelsea at Wembley.

Sead Kolasinac scored a dramatic equaliser in normal time - immediately after the Blues were reduced to 10 men.

Victor Moses opened the scoring in the at Wembley inside 60 seconds of the second-half but they lost Pedro to a red card for a poor challenge on Mohamed Elneny.

And Arsenal made them pay as Kolasinac headed in at the back post.

The encounter went to penalties as both Thibaut Courtois and Alvaro Morata missed before Olivier Giroud scored the winning spotkick.

The Gunners went closest to scoring during the first-half through new signing Alexandre Lacazette, who hit the post.

Arsenal have lost skipper Per Mertesacker to injury though, with the German suffering a blow to his head

Late in the first half, Willian was booked for diving by referee Bobby Madley after a challenge from Hector Bellerin.

Arsenal win Community Shield

Arsenal claimed the Community Shield at Wembley with a penalty shootout victory over Chelsea, following a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes.

The Gunners, who lost Per Mertesacker early on due to a head injury, had fallen behind early in the second half.

After a Chelsea corner wasn’t fully cleared, the ball was returned into the Arsenal box, and Victor Moses was on hand to fire Antonio Conte’s men in front.

However, Arsene Wenger’s side rallied, and after Pedro was sent off for a foul on Mohamed Elneny, Sead Kolasinac levelled the scores with a well-placed header just 82 seconds later.

That took the game to penalties, where Thibaut Courtois blazed over the crossbar and Alvaro Morata, Chelsea’s new record signing, fired wide.

On the new ABBA penalty rules, that left Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain score, offering Olivier Giroud the chance to hand Arsenal victory, which the Frenchman did with aplomb.

Here is a look at the winners and losers from the clash at Wembley.

Conte's verdict

I didn’t see the situation [with the sending off]. For me for this reason it is very difficult for me to say something about this decision.

This is the second game, after the FA Cup, that we finish with 10 men.

I heard there was clearly a penalty but I did not see.

We are working, we are trying to do our best. We had a tough pre-season, between the six days until we start the league it is important to be focused on the next game.

Wenger reacts to Community Shield win

Well, I don’t know if it was a sending off or not but at that moment we were dominating.

We had some difficult moments at the start of the second half but after that we dominated. We always looked dangerous.

Every game is a battle in the Premier League, like today. It is a dream to make the fans happy, a difficult dream but we try hard.

I would like they stand behind the team as we might go through some very good periods and some not so good periods.

We want to be united and together throughout the season.

5. Harsh on Willian

Referee Bobby Madley gave him a yellow card but the Chelsea winger was unlucky to be booked.

Hector Bellerin definitely caught him with his knee, causing the Brazilian to kick his own leg and go down.

Madley might not have deemed it a penalty but it most certainly was not simulation.

4. Ox the wing-back

He wants more regular first-team football and he started the match here - but at wing-back?

No wonder he could yet leave with just a year left on his contract. He wants to play in his favoured central midfield position.

You get the sense that Wenger has stuck him in at left wing-back to appease him, to keep him in the team. Now the master of his own destiny, Oxlade-Chamberlain is very likely to leave in search of a club able to field him in his best position.

3. Arsenal's attitude

They started fast with a point to prove after being humbled 3-0 in Beijing. Read nothing into that particular game.

It flattered Chelsea who were subsequently beaten twice in Singapore by Bayern Munich and Inter Milan.

Arsenal were much better here. Iwobi twice danced through the Blues defence.

Kolasinac surged deep into enemy territory with a fearless run and Lacazette - their £44million record signing - curled an effort against the post. A minute into the second half, they failed to clear a corner and Moses put Chelsea ahead.

But Kolasinac showed a never-say-die attitude that Arsene Wenger and the club’s fans would hope will last the season.

2. Same old Conte

He made it clear during Chelsea’s trip to the Far East that he would be trying to calm down a bit this season. It didn’t last too long here. He was on his feet throughout the first half, cajoling his players, directing the play and micro-managing their movement.

Late in the first half he put a flea in the ear of his defenders, urging them to wake up after being opened up by Alex Iwobi and Kolasinac.

Don’t believe a word of Conte’s claims that he will be taking it down a notch over the next ten months. If anything he will be moving up a gear.

What did we learn?

1. Bare Bones

Antonio Conte might be complaining about being down to the bare bones at Chelsea but it will still take some doing to break those bones over the coming seasobn. Kante in midfield was once again sublime.

Willian caused problems all day and the Blues backline held firm.

Michy Batshuayi pressed, harried and tracked back, well aware that £65million Alvaro Morata, starting on the bench, is the man set to become Diego Costa’s successor.

Conte quite clearly does need more quality during this final few weeks of the transfer window. But the defending champions, even with all their departures, are still a force to be reckoned with.

Fabregas 6 - Patrolled midfield, picked some good passes and will clearly be key again this season.

Kante 7 - Brilliant energy and runs. He gets forward and defends with equal measure.

Alonso 7 - Booked. Knows Chelsea want to buy another left back but still produced good display.

Willian 7 - Booked. Very harshly given a yellow for diving when replays showed he was clipped.

Pedro 6 - Sent off. Looked very harsh in a friendly but studs down Elneny’s Achilles.

Batshuayi 7 - You have to admire his persistence. Barely got a game last season, but still fighting.

What is the ABBA shootout?

The new ‘ABBA’ penalty shoot-out format will be used for this afternoon’s clash.

The new system, aimed at being fairer on the team taking the second penalty, will be trialled at Wembley.

The system is based on the format used in tennis tie-breaks, with the team taking the first kick in each pair of kicks alternating, so AB BA AB BA and so on instead of AB AB AB AB etc.

Got it?

Stay with us as we try to explain as the shootout goes on.

RED CARD! Pedro, 81

That was naughty from Pedro on Elneny.

The Spaniard catches Elneny on the Achilles and it’s a woeful tackle.
