Arsenal could be without Alexis Sanchez for two crucial games later this year with Chile facing a potential playoff in their bid to qualify for next summer's World Cup.

La Roja were beaten 1-0 by Bolivia on Tuesday night as a frustrating few weeks for Sanchez continued, after he failed to secure a move to Manchester City from Arsenal.

It leaves them sixth in South American qualifying with two matches in which to save their skin.

Fifth-placed Argentina currently occupy the playoff spot, with the team who finish in that spot set to play New Zealand over two legs on November 6 and November 14.

FIFA regulations state: “The player shall be released for the period of preparation.

"If the player is called up to play in a qualifying match for an international competition, the period of release shall be five days (including the day of the match) if the match in question is held on a different continent to that on which the club is domiciled.”

Arsenal take on Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League on November 2 before travelling to Manchester City in the Premier League on November 5.

Chile would demand their players meet up on November 2, ruling Sanchez out of those two fixtures should they finish in the playoff spot.
