Arsenal fear Danny Welbeck could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after a groin injury forced him out of the goalless draw with Chelsea.

The 26-year-old, who missed eight months of 2016 with a hyaline cartilage problem, was taken off in the 73rd minute after going down clutching his groin and is now awaiting the results of a scan.

Manager Arsene Wenger was cryptic when talking about Welbeck's latest injury after the game, but Mirror Sport understands the forward could be out of action for several weeks if the scan confirms the suspected groin tear.

“He has a groin problem. I don’t know how severe it is but it looks like a 'good' groin problem, not an easy one,” said Wenger.

Regardless of Welbeck's injury, Wenger will have been pleased for to see his side earn a valuable point at Chelsea following disappointing away defeats against Stoke and Liverpool.

Speaking about the game, he said: "I felt it was a game with total intensity, where two teams really went for it and was a battle all over the pitch. We responded well in domains where we were questioned, you know, and I like when the team shows that kind of response.

"Overall I feel it’s a deserved point and with a bit more freedom maybe, less inhibition, we could have really won this game with one or two goals difference. But overall for us it was important at least not to lose today and you could feel that in the team in the last 20 minutes that we played a little bit with that in our mind."

On what had changed since the game at Stoke, he added: "I believe at Stoke we had a good performance on the football front. We had 77 per cent possession, [and could have had] three penalties. We were a bit lucky we didn’t score. I agree, the result was very disappointing but the performance was not so disappointing.

"When you’re a football player, there’s only one thing that matters — the next game and how you respond to it. That’s what we did today."
