Arsenal legend Paul Merson is set to come out of retirement for Welsh part-timers Caerau FC next week.

Merson, 49, hung up his boots in 2006 and is now a pundit with Sky Sports.

Since speaking at an after-dinner event a number of years ago in Maesteg, Merson has kept in contact with Caerau secretary Dai Hooper.

Hooper has attempted to get Merson to sign on but his role on Soccer Saturday has prevented him from doing so.

However, a rearranged fourth-tier fixture against Pontyclun on October 18 could see the former England star make an appearance as the club look to raise funds for a new stand and an academy.

"He came down for an event five or six years ago and did some after-dinner speaking," Hooper told BBC Radio Wales.

"We got talking and have kept in touch over the last few years.

"I text him last week with the rearranged fixture and he said 'I can make that'.

"We hope it will attract a lot of interest, boost our gate and get some money into the club."

And even if he can, Hooper is offering no guarantees that the Gunners legend will start.

"He looks ok! I haven't seen him since March - but he looks alright on the box," he joked.

"He was a superstar. It is down to the manager [where he plays]. It's top secret."
