Arsenal saw off Newcastle at the Emirates thanks to a stunning strike from Mesut Ozil.

The German scored the only goal of the game, thumping a volley past Rob Elliott.

Newcastle threatened in the second-half but they were left frustrated as they slipped to another defeat.

Ozil impressed during the victory, as did Ainsley Maitland-Niles on another outing.

Here are Arsenal's player ratings from our friends at Football.London.

Petr Cech 7 - The goalkeeper barely had anything to do for the majority of the game yet when he was called into action the veteran made sure his gloves had the Arsenal nets covered. Sometimes a quiet shift between the sticks can lead to lapses in concentration. Not today.

Hector Bellerin 4 - He made some bright runs. The problem was what happened to the right-back once he got to the ball. Sloppy, slow-witted and off his game, he was a disappointing presence down the right-hand side

Laurent Koscielny 5 - The Frenchman didn't look comfortable at all for the opening 20 minutes, despite Arsenal dominating the ball. Settled down as he grew into the game but unusually nervy for a centre-back of his quality and experience

Nacho Monreal 6 - Former Gunners such as Martin Keown may be questioning his right to play as a centre-back, especially in a back four, but the Spaniard was strong, assertive and aggressive, unlike his partner, and much more confident on the ball.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles 8 - Full of confidence, bravery, ideas and agility, the young midfielder broke free from his moorings out at left-back to drive forward through the heart of the pitch to get the home side motoring. Showed his intelligence off the ball too with some well timed runs beyond the last man to get behind Newcastle and stretch their defence ou

Granit Xhaka 4 - Hardly a terrible game for the Swiss international but it was telling that when Arsenal went looking for a player to start moves from in front of the defence it was Mesut Ozil who stepped back into the team to direct the play. It isn't clear what Xhaka added to the game. Made a dismal effort to switch the play with two minutes left to play that almost lead to a Newcastle equaliser. Carded late on for a trip to stem another counter-attack.

Jack Wilshere 7 - Quietly commanding in the middle. His work wasn't always flashy or full of his trademark dribbles. Wilshere kept it tight, played smart and showed good maturity with and without the ball.

Alex Iwobi 7 - Outshone Wilshere at times and took to the task of getting Arsenal up the field as fast as possible with his quick release passes and runs with the ball. Subbed off for Danny Welbeck 75 minutes in

Mesut Ozil 8 - An alternative 'best of' performance from the German who popped up for the opening goal, fell back to split the centre-backs and played the sort of roaming, deep role that Arsenal fans have often spotted him take on for his country and questioned why he can't do the same for his club. If bonus points existed for the quality of a player's finish for a goal, Ozil would have been bumped up to a 10. It was a tremendously volley, sweetly struck and utterly unstoppable

Alexis Sanchez 6 - Still a bit too shaky in possession at times but determined to make something of every touch of the ball - often to his detriment - the Chilean wasn't neat and tidy but he was more of a positive presence than a negative one. Taken off Coquelin with minutes to go

Alexandre Lacazette 7 - His movement added an extra dimension to Arsenal's approach play that was missing with Olivier Giroud up top against West Ham. Some clever passes to pick holes in the Newcastle defence when it was wiser to find a teammate than go for a chance himself. Removed for Giroud with just over 15 minutes to go

Subs

Danny Welbeck 6 (on for Iwobi) - He added some fresh legs to the attack to spur on the Gunners to try and find another goal.

Olivier Giroud 6 (on for Lacazette) - Made a similar impression to Welbeck as Arsenal looked to make it 2-0. His presence in the box clearly unsettled the visitors. Put in some good defensive headers late on at the other end of the pitch too.

Francis Coquelin 5 (on for Sanchez) - Brought on to see out the game as another body in midfield. Was a rather haphazard addition to the midfield. Didn't help to cover for Xhaka's poor positioning.
