Arsenal are set to give their fans a huge boost - by adding almost 1,000 more seats to the Emirates Stadium.

Gunners bosses are planning to install around 800 to the capacity by adding extra seats to the club level seating to the ground.

The plan has been named Operation Saturn - branded after the rings around the famed planet - as the outfit aim to boost their capacity, as originally reported by football.london.

The Emirates have seen the 60,000 capacity dipped due to adding extra facilities for disabled supporters and other projects.

The capacity has now dipped below the 60,000 mark - it currently sits at 59,867 - and Arsenal want to raise that number back to the sort of figure it was when the stadium first opened in 2006.

If the improvements are given the green light by Islington Council, the club do not expect, however, that the capacity would raise to a figure larger than that of Tottenham's new ground - which will be open for the 2018/19 Premier League season.

Once completed, current seat holders at the Emirates will be given the opportunity to move into the new seats, with their vacated seats then offered to fans who are currently on the waiting list.

When contacted by football.london about the project, an Arsenal spokesman said: “We are working with Islington Council to assess viable options to increase our capacity at Emirates Stadium.

“As a result of a number of required stadium projects, our capacity has decreased over the last few years and we are looking at ways to bring this figure back up to allow more supporters to watch the team play at Emirates Stadium.

“We will communicate further details at a later date as these plans develop.”
