Arsene Wenger has revealed that Mohamed Elneny's proposed transfer to Arsenal is being held up by paperwork.

Basel's Egyptian midfielder was expected to have been unveiled by now - but Wenger says there are a number of factors delaying the deal.

“I expect movement [this week]," said Wenger. "I think this week it can happen, we are positive.

“The situation should be sorted out. There’s a lot of work permit problems and special paperwork to do and the visa. We hope to finalise it this week.”

While the deal is still set to go ahead, Wenger warned against taking anything for granted.

He said: “As long as it’s not definitely signed you have to be cautious, but I’m optimistic.”

Wenger also took time to praise former Arsenal forward Benik Afobe, who signed for Bournemouth in a £10million deal on Sunday.

"I don’t know how well he’ll do but he has the qualities to integrate at a team like Bournemouth," said the Frenchman.
