Arsene Wenger says “of course” Arsenal will offer Jack Wilshere a new contract.

Gunners midfielder Wilshere is currently on a season-long loan to Bournemouth who Arsenal face at the Emirates on Sunday.

But Wilshere, 24, only has 18 months left on his current deal and his long term future is a concern as he had to leave to get regular games. Wilshere cannot play against his parent club while out on loan.

When asked whether Arsenal will offer Wilshere a new deal, Wenger said: “Of course.

"Ideally [it will be addressed before next summer]. We have to plan around the new year.

“I am happy that he is developing well. It was a good decision for him to go to get regular football.

He is getting stronger every week and that is exactly what he needed. When a player like Jack is in top form, you miss him.”

Wenger admitted he has not spoken to Wilshere since he left to join Bournemouth on loan which is hardly surprising as he is under Eddie Howe’s management this season.

But Wenger expects talks to start soon and says he gets regular updates and scouting reports on his progress.

“I ask every week how did he play but I haven’t spoken to him,” said Wenger. “I am happy that he has had no injuries since he left us.

"I leave him to talk to his manager. When I can watch him, I do watch him.

"I'm happy that Wilshere develops well, in the end it was a good decision. He gets regular football, getting stronger every week.”

Wenger is still without Santi Cazorla and Hector Bellerin but hopes Lucas Perez will be back to face Southampton in the League Cup next week.
