Basel wonderkid Dimitri Oberlin has given his reasons for turning down Manchester United.

Winger Oberlin is currently on a season loan at Swiss side Basel from Austrian outfit RB Salzburg.

The Cameroonian-born Switzerland under21 international has turned heads around Europe with outstanding performances in both the Swiss League, where he helped Basel to third, and in the Champions League, where his side have shocked Benfica and CSKA Moscow.

After netted five goals in 10 appearances, 20-year-old Oberlin has attracted the attention of Juventus and Real Madrid.

But it was United, who are also in Basel's Champions League group, who first courted Oberlin back in 2014.

The then 17-year-old snubbed the glitz of Old Trafford to join Salzburg from FC Zurich despite getting the OK from his mum and dad - because he didn't want to sit in the youth teams.

"Yes, they (United) had been watching me - the transfer almost happened. In the end I decided otherwise,” Oberlin told Spox. "My parents had allowed me to transfer, but I did not.

"I would have started at the U18, the way into the first team would have been far. The competition would have been massive."
