Antonio Rudiger piled more misery on hapless Everton as the German's nod put Chelsea ahead.

The defender lopped a header over Jordan Pickford mid-way through the first half as he went up for a corner.

It meant that the David Unsworth caretaker spell looks set to continue in the same way as Ronald Koeman's doomed tenure.

Michy Batshuayi almost doubled straight away but his tame effort was easily stopped before Davide Zappacosta drilled wide on the cusp of half time.

Chelsea XI: Caballero; Christensen, Rudiger, Cahill; Zappacosta, Drinkwater, Ampadu, Kenedy; Willian, Batshuayi, Musonda.Subs: Eduardo, Clarke-Salter, Sterling, Scott, Fabregas, Pedro, Morata

Everton XI: Pickford, Baines, Williams, Jagielka, Kenny, Baningime, McCarthy, Davies, Lennon, Mirallas, Rooney. Subs: Joel, Keane, Holgate, Sigurdsson, Lookman, Calvert-Lewin, Niasse

Unsworth on future

David Unsworth has revealed he will meet with Everton chairman Bill Kenwright on Friday for an update on his future after suffering defeat to Chelsea in his first game as caretaker manager.

The Toffees produced a fine second half display but eventually went down 2-1 at Stamford Bridge to exit the Carabao Cup.

Unsworth, who has spent the last three years coaching the Under-23s, is keen to land the top job but would not be drawn on what it will take.

“I think I’m scheduled to meet them Friday afternoon,” Unsworth said. “I speak to the chairman two or three times a day.

“What will be will be. We have to win some games.

“There’s no points return, or games total they’ve set. We’ll continue to work and plan game to game.

“What has happened has happened, I can only influence tonight, the training sessions and moving forward.”

Unsworth’s next opportunity to stake his claim for the job comes this weekend when the Toffees travel to Leicester.

How did he react?

Well this is what he wold the BBC:

“Nobody likes losing games, I’m a bad loser but I have to say I’m proud of the performance, they were terrific.

“We are disappointed to lose, we think we had chances to get something from the game.

“We knew James McCarthy could only play for 60 minutes so we were always going to change things then. We limited Chelsea and then opened it up.

Jack Rathborn's report from Stamford Bridge

Antonio Rudiger’s header and Willian’s sharp finish after a one-two with Cesc Fabregas saw Chelsea into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

The Blues also inflicted defeat on David Unsworth in his first game as caretaker manager.

Charly Musonda received a short corner from Willian before whipping it to the far post for the Germany international to loop a header back across goal and into the net.

Willy Caballero merely watched for 55 minutes before expertly denying Wayne Rooney from point-blank range.

The Toffees rallied and almost profited from Caballero’s sloppy ball out before a slight deflection sent Aaron Lennon’s effort from six yards just over the bar.

Michy Batshuayi almost capitalised when the ball went past the onrushing Jordan Pickford, but Phil Jagielka recovered superbly to deny him on the line.

Ademola Lookman’s powerful drive hit the bar but the Blues held on to secure their place in the next round.

In some late drama, Willian appeared to put the game to bed after neat interplay with Fabregas before Dominic Calvert-Lewin gave the Toffees hope, but too late.

Willy Caballero

For a keeper who hasn’t had a lot of game time this season, Caballero is impressing tonight.

He is keeping Chelsea in this at times.

Two really good saves so far.

Ethan Ampadu started for Chelsea in Carabao Cup tie against Everton and instantly made everyone feel old

What were you doing when you were 17? Hanging out with your mates? Maybe trying to sneak in to your local pub?

Well whatever it was, it probably wasn’t as cool as what Ethan Ampadu got up to Wednesday evening.

The youngster - who has been named in Chris Coleman’s Wales squad but is yet to make his senior international debut for the country of his mother’s birth - was given his first Chelsea start by Antonio Conte on Wednesday, with the Italian picking the 17-year-old in his side to face Everton in the Carabao Cup at Stamford Bridge.

And while for some it might be the David Luiz-like hair sported by Ampadu - who signed from Exeter City in the summer - which immediately catches the eye, others had something else in mind when they saw he was starting.

Because as the first player ever to start a match for Chelsea who was born in the 21st century - arriving in the world on September 14, 2000 - Ampadu made a lot of think the same thing...

GOOAAAAL! CHELSEA

David Unsworth

Doesn’t look like Unsworth is going to be a shy caretaker manager.

The man in the Everton dugout has been very lively in the technical area.

Trying to get his Toffees out of their stupor. So far so good.

He joined the Blues from Leicester on deadline day.

Otherwise very strong look to that team.

Chelsea team news

Chelsea debut for Danny Drinkwater.

Musonda makes his second start.

David Unsworth

David Unsworth will lead Everton for the second time tonight.

His first appearance in the dug out was in May 2016 when he stood in after Roberto Martinez was sacked - he won it 3-0 over Norwich.

This time he is taking over the reins from Ronald Koeman - who was ditched at the weekend.

Unsworth has arrived at Stamford Bridge and is looking in good humour ahead of the game.

Greetings

Stand-in boss David Unsworth took the first steps towards picking up the pieces of Everton’s season — and admitted he wants the job long term.

Unsworth revealed he has held detailed talks with chairman Bill Kenwright after being asked to take charge initially for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup last-16 visit to Chelsea.

He did not accept immediately, in part because he wants certain assurances about his prospects.

“I want to manage Everton,” said the former Goodison defender on Tuesday. “It’s an amazing club for anyone to become manager of and I think the time has come to say that. Why make a secret of it?

“I spent the afternoon with the chairman yesterday and I asked him how long he wanted me to take the job for. I would like a run at it. But results will dictate how long I get. I’m OK with that.”
