David Beckham congratulated former Manchester United youth team Class of '92 boss Eric Harrison on his MBE with an epic team throwback photo.

Shortly after it was announced Harrison was awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours list, the ex-England football star took to social media to praise his old coach.

The 79-year-old helped bring through Beckham, Ryan Giggs , Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Gary Neville as part of the famous FA Youth Cup winning side of 1992.

Alongside the vintage shot, Beckham wrote: "So proud of Eric for being awarded an MBE ... Someone that has done so much for me personally and for a man that as a kid scared the hell out of me but prepared me for the career I was going to have for club and country."

He continued: "This honour is for the work that he has done for Manchester United producing great young players year after year .. Congratulations Eric to you and your family."

The picture Beckham posted features Giggs, Nicky Butt, Becks, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Scholes.

Harrison is highly regarded by the players he helped to bring through, so much so that they all recently paid him a visit when they found out he was battling dementia.

Harrison's grandson Joseph Hilditch reached out to the players in the hope they would give his grandad a boost and they all turned up within a week of him asking, reports the MEN.

"David had driven up to Halifax from London and he seemed nervous when he came up the drive,” his daughter Vicky told the Times in an interview earlier this year.

“I could see he was shocked and upset at first, just like the other lads were. He had brought a cake that he had baked with his kids — a carrot cake, lovely it was — and a bottle of whisky, which was lovely of him."

Harrison and Sir Alex Ferguson's relationship was key to United's youth success.

Ferguson would urge Harrison to bring more and more youth players through and United currently boast a record going back 80 years of having a homegrown player in every first team squad since 30 October 1937.

In 27 years at Old Trafford, Harrison mentored a number of high-profile youngsters, including Mark Hughes, Wes Brown and David Platt.

While some players struggled with his tough love approach, daughter Vicky believes it was ultimately the making of them as professional footballers.

“I know he was tough on those lads, but he loved them — not just the ones I’ve mentioned but also the ones who didn’t make it," she said.

"He loved his job, but he said the worst part by far was having to release players.

“He loved Scholesy, absolutely loved him. Mark Hughes was another, from the earlier years, but he loved all of them. He would never have a bad word said about any of them. Although he was very hard on them at the time, he retained a really strong bond with all of them. He had a real connection with them all, as we have seen since, sadly, he got ill.”
