It wasn't pretty. It wasn't in the slightest bit entertaining. But England are off to the World Cup.

We're just months from the sales of car flags, beach towels and sticker albums going through the roof (yes, I'm looking at you) even though it doesn't feel particularly exciting just yet.

England have limped to Russia, but there are a few causes for optimism, mostly in Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford shaped packages.

So - who will, barring injury and other indiscretions, definitely be on the plane? And who is waiting in the wings to prove their worth?

Here's how the squad could take shape...

Who's on the plane?

Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Raheem Sterling, Gary Cahill, Danny Rose, Kyle Walker, Marcus Rashford, Eric Dier, John Stones, Joe Hart, Jack Butland, Adam Lallana, Jordan Henderson

Barring injuries or suspension, as things stand now, this lot will be stick-ons to be on the plane to Russia.

Kane will spearhead the attack with Alli, Sterling and Rashford also having hopes pinned on them for attacking output.

Like it or lump it, Hart is England's No1, with Butland certain to be his deputy.

Stones and Cahill are the only centre halves nailed on for a place in the squad, along with full-backs walker and Rose.

Who's in the departure lounge?

Ryan Bertrand, Jordan Pickford, Kieran Trippier, Jamie Vardy, Phil Jones, Michael Keane, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

This lot should make the squad, but haven't quite cemented their place yet.

England aren't blessed with full-backs and you'd think Bertrand and Trippier are currently the deputies.

Pickford currently has the third goalie spot and has impressed despite playing in a struggling Everton side.

Vardy is doing enough to keep his spot in the squad, but Oxlade-Chamberlain is perhaps the one in this group that has the most to prove given his indifferent start to life at Liverpool.

Who's waiting in the wings?

Chris Smalling, Harry Maguire, Danny Welbeck, Fraser Forster, Nathaniel Clyne, Harry Winks, Jesse Lingard

File this lot as could make the squad, but could easily fall out of contention.

Smalling and Maguire are what you'd call 'next in line' for the centre-half berths, with Forster ready to step in should one of the other goalkeepers suffer injury/suspension/form issues.

Winks has impressed in the early part of the season for Spurs and earned his England debut in Lithuania. Welbeck and Lingard must put consistent runs together to convince Southgate they are the answers.

Who has much to prove?

Jake Livermore, Ross Barkley, Theo Walcott, Danny Drinkwater, Daniel Sturridge, Jermain Defoe, Nathaniel Chalobah, Jack Wilshere, Luke Shaw, Fabian Delph, Andy Carroll, Aaron Cresswell

Sorry, England hopefuls, but if you haven't read your name yet, you're not going to Russia. At least in the eyes of this writer.

Barkley, Wilshere and Walcott are the most interesting ones here. All three have the undoubted talent to be England regulars, but a mixture of fitness and form means they are currently flattering to deceive.

File Sturridge under that category too, although his best days may sadly be behind him if recent displays are anything to go by.

Defoe, Shaw, Delph, Carroll, Livermore and Drinkwater will still harbour hopes of selection, but will need to put together an impressive run of form between now and the end of the season to get themselves in contention.

Chalobah is the wildcard - can England's record age group appearance maker prove his worth on the big stage?
