Never mind Sam Allardyce, Everton may have to call for Red Adair to put this particular fire out.

The abject surrender here in Lyon - which saw the Blues exit shame-faced from the Europa League with two matches still remaining – raises questions not just about form and confidence, but about spirit and heart.

It is as if someone has taken a match and put a bonfire under the team that was ready to gate-crash the top six party...and David Unsworth can not carry the can for that.

Here, the caretaker manager set his side up with tight organisation, with a solid game-plan and with a sense of purpose.

It worked so well for 70 minutes, that even the passionate Lyon support began to think the game had swung in Everton’s favour, with the home side running out of ideas and opportunities.

But then one moment of ill-fortune, when Morgan Schneiderlin’s challenge with no obvious danger, fell to Bertrand Traore to gift the former Chelsea striker a simple goal, heralded a waving of a white flag.

It left Unsworth perplexed and angry, with the no-nonsense former defender admitting he had been blunt in giving his side a few home truths.

“I’ve left the players in no uncertain terms Sunday is now a huge for the club, a huge game for me - a huge game for them as well,” he said.

“I’ve been honest with them, and I am always honest with any set of players I stand in front of. I think players – and myself as a player – respect honesty from the manager.

“I told them what I think is required to move forward. I think that is best left in the dressing room, but I will continue to be honest because I feel that is the best way to be.”

As Unsworth pointed out, any side can concede an unlucky goal, but it is the reaction afterwards that suggests any new manager coming in during the international break will find it equally as hard to put fight in this side as Unsworth has, and Ronald Koeman did.

The loss of Romelu Lukaku’s goals can’t explain what happened to the entire side for the second goal, when a simple long ball caught Everton out and even though the again impressive Jordan Pickford saved from sub Mariano Diaz, Houssem Aouar had too much time to convert the rebound.

Schneiderlin capped another undistinguished evening with a stupid second yellow to get himself sent off, and former Manchester United man Memphis Depay rounded out the humiliation with a fine header at the end.

By then, Everton were an empty shell of a side, and if either Allardyce or Sean Dyche were watching at home, they may just have had second thoughts about reviving this side.
