Brendan Rodgers has suggested his failure to sign Alexis Sanchez will go down as his biggest transfer regret from his time at liverpool.

The club had identified the Chilean star as their number one target to replace Luis Suarez, who departed for Barcelona in the summer of 2014, report the Liverpool Echo.

Having just narrowly missed out on the Premier League title, Rodgers wanted to maintain the Reds' momentum with the capture of the South American from Barcelona.

Sanchez opted to join Arsenal instead however, while Liverpool opted for Mario Balotelli — a move which would contribute to their fall from second to sixth within a season.

Rodgers — who is preparing to take on Bayern Munich with Celtic on Tuesday night — has admitted the failure to sign a top class replacement for Suarez prevented his side from progressing as expected.

“We felt like Luis was going to move on and we needed to get a world-class operator to go like-for-like,” Rodgers told TalkSport.

“We finished second in the league playing a great level of football.

“Players were flexible in how they could play and then it was about trying to make that next step.

“And for that we needed to get a replacement. And we deemed Sanchez to be that one.”

Sanchez have scored 74 goals since his move to the Emirates, while Balotelli managed just four in his one year on Merseyside.

Liverpool's errors in the transfer market that summer would ultimately cost Rodgers his job just over 12 months later, with FSG sacking the Northern Irishman in October 2015.
