Gareth Southgate wants Jack Butland to give him a selection dilemma with his keepers ahead of the World Cup.

The Stoke star will start in goal for England in their final World Cup qualifier against Lithuania.

The Three Lions secured their place with their controversial last-gasp win at home to Slovenia last Thursday.

Butland now replaces regular no.1 Joe Hart, for England’s last match in Group F.

Southgate, set to make changes for tomorrow’s clash, said: "He has been patient for his opportunity, his form has been good. It's a good opportunity for Jack.

"We've got great competition for places. Joe was excellent the other night. We've got other good goalkeepers.”

The likes of Jordan Pickford, Fraser Forster and currently-injured Tom Heaton are expected to be vying for places come next summer.

England have conceded just three goals in nine qualifiers, are well served for goalkeeping options.

Butland insisted that while the Three Lions keepers are all good friends, there is an intense rivalry between them to land the no.1 shirt.

He said: “It's really good between all of us to be fair. We're all after the same shirt but we're keen to push each other to a high standard because that means success for us as a nation.

“We have brilliant rivalry but a great friendship too. We went on to make some great saves and put in a really good performance for us which is what we want and I'm sure it would go the opposite way if someone else is in goal.”

Southgate has refused to confirm the captain for tomorrow’s game - or for the long term - after Harry Kane wore the armband at Wembley on Thursday night.

He has also hit back at suggestions that the captaincy saga has become a farce.

The England boss said: “I get the obsession and I am getting more stubborn over it, frankly, because I'll make a decision when I'm ready.

“There are things you do as a coach, you do for a particular reason, not just to please people.”

Southgate has defended England, however, against suggestions that they lack the creativity to make an impact at the World Cup.

He added: “We have a lot of players we havent been able to select this time. Adam Lallana, over the last year has been the best player for us, no question.

“We've been without him for three matches this season. We have players with creativity, we didn't perform at the level we wanted the other night, nobody is going to dress that up any differently, but the objective of qualification is achieved. How do we improve as a team looking forward? The process begins tomorrow.”
