Gary Lineker has claimed that Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is "overrated".

Benzema hit a blank for the sixth time in eight competitive appearances for Real this season during Tuesday night's 1-1 draw with Tottenham.

After Harry Kane's involvement in Spurs' opener, Real fans on social media were calling for their side to sign the England international as a replacement for Benzema.

Match of the Day presenter Lineker holds a similar opinion, insisting that the Frenchman is not world class.

Writing on Twitter, he said: "Is it me or is Benzema a tad overrated?

"A goal every other game in a team as strong as Real Madrid is nada especial.

"Decent not great."

Real are plotting a £150million move for Kane next summer after manager Zinedine Zidane admitted his admiration for him.

And Kane proved his worth when his pressure forced Raphael Varane to bundle the ball into his own net and give Spurs the lead.

Before the game, Zidane said: "In the present what he's doing, he's a very important player, a key player for Tottenham, very good at everything but he always does it all towards the goal.

"He does not stay, he takes the space with speed and he's very good. He's a complete player. He didn't seem to be but in the end he is."
