Manchester United legend Gary Neville has criticised forward Romelu Lukaku for his display in Saturday's goalless draw at Anfield , claiming he failed his first big Red Devils test.

The Belgian had scored seven goals in seven Premier League appearances for his new club before the trip to Merseyside, but Liverpool snuffed out his threat fairly easily.

Lukaku struggled to get into the game, and as reported by our friends at the Manchester Evening News , pundit Neville didn't hold back in his analysis.

“I was disappointed with Lukaku,” he said on Sky Sports .

“But it’s a tough place to come, it’s a really tough place to come.

“It looked like he was distracted in the first half, he wasn’t himself, he was frustrated. He really didn’t get any impact in the game, no influence.

“It’s the big matches that will define him as a Manchester United striker, not the matches where he sort of bullies teams."

He’s done that already this season and he’s taken all the praise, he’s had a brilliant start to his Manchester United career.

“But, on a game like today, that’s a game where you really are judged.

"I didn’t think his influence was good enough.”
