Mesut Ozil is so confident that he will join Manchester United he has even told his Arsenal team-mates that he will make the switch.

The Germany midfielder is into the final year of his contract at the Emirates and with no agreement over a new deal on the horizon, Arsene Wenger admitted publicly last week that they could sell him in January.

That could see the 29-year-old link up again with his former boss Jose Mourinho, following the pair's stint together at Real Madrid.

The Red Devils boss has previously said that he regards Ozil as the best No10 in the world and signing his former charge from under the nose of his old rivals will no doubt be hugely satisfying for Mourinho.

But with the Red Devils already blessed with attacking talent, where would the German fit in at Old Trafford?

The Number 10 role

With Mourinho waxing lyrical about Ozil's abilities in the No10 role, it's a logical place to imagine him at Old Trafford.

It's not a role he's often filled at Arsenal though, as he has usually been utilised out wide on either flank, cutting in where he can.

But Ozil excelled in the middle at Real Madrid and Mourinho will no doubt be earmarking him to fill in behind the striker. If Ozil can rediscover his Madrid form, the pace of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial could be used to devastating effect. With Romelu Lukaku on hand to bang them in up front, this could provide United with a thrilling attack.

This then gives Henrikh Mkhitaryan the chance to nail down a regular place on the right, where he excelled for Borussia Dortmund in the 2015-16 season before he was snapped up by the Red Devils.

Ozil has put in plenty of minutes out wide for Arsenal over the past few years and should Jose Mourinho want to stick with the likes of Juan Mata, Paul Pogba and Mkhitaryan who have served him so well in the No10 role this season, the German may be pushed out wide again.

Mourinho has rotated Mkhitaryan and Mata on the right-hand side this season and Ozil's skillset would most likely see him added to this group.

Ozil has fielded charges of being unmotivated and disinterested for Arsenal of late and he would need to significantly up his work rate if he is to operate in a Mourinho system.

Perhaps a change is what the World Cup winner needs and if he is to recreated his previous form under Mourinho at the Bernabeu, then this could be the platform to do it.

With Mata, Pogba and Mkhitaryan all able to fill Ozil's No10 role and a wealth of options out wide, Ozil would need to quickly prove that he has more to offer than his team-mates, otherwise he will have to settle for a place in United's rotation.

On his current form - and that of United's attacking talent this season - it would be hard to justify a place in Mourinho's starting XI, but that would probably not stop the Red Devils boss from taking a punt on his former charge.

Is he worth signing?

Mourinho knows what Ozil's ceiling is and the chance to land a player of Ozil's abilities - ones Mourinho knows first hand - on such a cheap deal does not come around very often.

With United on the brink of the knockout stages of the Champions League, more bodies is always a good thing and the transfer would also weaken one of their rivals.

The club can easily afford his wages and it would also take the pressure off Juan Mata's upcoming contract talks, with the Spaniard's deal also set to expire at the end of the season.
