Jesse Lingard has spoken out about the influence Wayne Rooney had on him at Manchester United, claiming he learnt something from the striker every single day.

Rooney left Old Trafford after 13 years service at the end of last season, signing off as the club's all-time leading goalscorer, before putting pen to paper with his boyhood team Everton.

Lingard, who is still progressing through the ranks at United, had the opportunity to train alongside the 31-year-old over the course of a few years - in between loan spells at various clubs - and admitted it will be hard for anyone to follow in his footsteps.

"You learn every day from him [Rooney]. His experience in games, especially when you're young," explained Lingard.

"If it's only 1-0 it's always hard to manage a game, and he knew what to do at times, especially towards the end of games.

"Of course, it is hard to follow him, he's always going to be recognised as a legend at the club and he'll get a great reception when he comes back.

"Obviously, he was there as a young boy and he thought it was the right decision at the time."

Lingard has featured three times for Manchester United in the Premier League this season, missing their 4-0 win over Swansea City.

He also played a part in their 3-0 win over Basel in the Champions League, but has yet to find the back of the net so far this campaign.
